Setting monitor color depth

Is there a way in OS X 10.2.6 to script the monitor color depth? I have an old app that requires 256 colors and I'm looking for a scriptable approach to changing color depth rather than using System Preferences to change it.

I saw "max monitor depth", "min monitor depth", and "monitor depth" in osaxen.com's listing for AppleScript 1.9 but I can't find those in any of the scripting addition dictionaries.
