AFAIK, you can't. There's no way to do this (which works perfectly in OS 9):

What I previously wrote was poorly worded. This should clear things up.
Basically, you CAN'T do anything on the desktop LIKE YOU COULD WITH OS 9.
When you run select disk, the Finder opens a new window entitled LocalHost
(which contains all of your the items in /Volumes, selects that appropriate
item in that window, but doesn't select the item from your desktop (which
is really the current user's desktop folder); THUS, YOU CAN'T SET ITS
POSITION (WHICH I COULDN'T FIND IN THE FINDER'S DICTIONARY).
