Last night I submitted the following to Apple's Bugreporter ad a feature request. Anyone have any comments - or are lots of other people here "HyperCard veterans"?
There were a number of HyperCard veterans among the development and QA team that wrote AppleScript. While it did not come out identical, that was never an intention, since it was largely impossible without rewriting HyperCard too, and AppleScript wasn't going to do that. Instead, they created an engine that could do for every application what HyperTalk did for HyperCard.
As such, some conventions were introduced for HyperTalk writers, such as being able to write "put foo into bar" and have it transformed into "copy foo to bar".
One of the biggest things AppleScript did was allow binary data like "real" programming languages, which is often not what scripters expect. They seem to expect everything as text and get very confused when it isn't. In retrospect, a textual basis for AppleScript would undoubtedly help.
