Hmm, couldn't you just change permissions on the ntp.conf file so that
it can't be written to? Give it a try, I bet it would work.

Hi folks!
I know this is way off topic, but of all the lists I'm lurking on I
couldn't think of where else to go. I've tried a book here, a google
there and even played with Apple's search engine, but haven't found
what I'm looking for yet. You folks seem to know the guts of the
system pretty well ...
If you go into System Preferences -> Date & Time, you can tell the OS
to use a network time server to synch it's time up with (it's on the
Date & Time tab in Panther, I remember it there in Jaguar also but
don't remember exactly where). By default, the system gives you some
options to synch up with Apple's time servers in the US, Asia, Europe
...
I want to start using one of our own servers instead (it's setup as a
stratum 3 NTP server, which uses a few servers to synch with including
Apple's). I know I could just change the ntp.conf file to do this, but
if someone hits that drop down bar suddenly I have no choice but to
pick Apple's servers again (it overwrites the ntp.conf file
immediately and without further provocation) ...
Anyone know where the system keeps that list of Apple's time servers?
I'd like to add my server to that list so I can switch between them ad
nauseum; is it in a plist somewhere?
(Why on earth would I want to mess with this? Our company has a number
of machines that I want synched together time-wise. I want to be a
good citizen about this and sync all our machines to one, which is
synched to the outside world. Besides, I have this old AIX server
sitting here with very little to do! I'd like it to show in that drop
down list with Apple's servers so it's easy to change back when some
bozo plays with it and messes this all up for me. Worse comes to
worse, I could write an AppleScript to change ntp.conf back, but it
would be nicer if I didn't have to. Besides, that idea was mostly to
get the word "AppleScript" in this post. :-)
