Do either of these options actually switch off the power to the AirPort card
/ BlueTooth module? That, rather than managing connections, is what I hope
to achieve - the idea being to conserve battery power when I don't need
network access / am not using my bluetooth mouse.

Jake's suggestion (setting up Airport On/Off 'locations' in Network prefs
and switching between them with a GUI script) killed the connection to the
Airport base station when the 'Off' location was selected, but left the card
powered up.
