A few hundred years ago - think OS 6 and multifinder - the idea of using a private "desk scrap" was encouraged. One only populated the system scrap when a process swap occurred and even then one did not need to keep all of the information in the private scrap. Copying the "standard" types, TEXT, PICT, and some others was enough. In some cases, MS Excel, the private scrap was often just a pointer to the original information.
Machines were slower in those days and memory for storing the scrap could be scarce while the application switch was taking place.
Do any applications support an AppleEvent that explicitly cause them to populate or read from the system scrap? Would it make any difference if the receiving file was "activated" explicitly in the AppleScript? What if the script is executed by the application rather than by Script Editor or as an APPL?
