Hi,

you already get (and read) why the original questioneer want to change the creation date.

Here's another usage (more 'modern' !):

You have Windows informations you put in a CD-R (a CD-RW and even a Memory Stick) and you want to use them on your Macintosh Computer.

Unfortunately, the Apple translator used (MS-DOS File Translator or something like that) with Mac OS X 10.3 (and probably previous) 'till 10.3.6 (I do not tested yet 10.3.7) does not set the Creation Date of the copied objects.

The result is file with a bad Creation Date and the Finder displays the 1904 date :(

There is a solution to avoid this right now: copy the files using the LAN (Ethernet cable between the two computers using Windows Sharing works fine for me [I wasn't able to do the reverse: take the files from the Macintosh]).

A second work-around also exists, but I do not know how to do it: I had a CD-RW with Windows files (html, jpg and so on) which do no have creation date under Macintosh (correct dates under Windows). Someone makes a copy of that CD-RW on a second CD-RW and all of a sudden, I was able to not loose the Creation Dates and I even saw some folder contents (these folders were 'invisible' under Macintsh) that I was able to copy to my Macintosh and then archive them.

Still no solution (to change the Creation Date using AppleScript) ?

Do you know how to copy Windows files using a Memory Stick (also using CD-R / CD-RW) without loosing the files original Creation Date ?

In both Gnarlodious and my cases, it is legitimate - even for a newbie / simple user - to be able to change the Creation Date.

TIA,

Emile

Is there any way to set a file's creation date?

This runs:
tell application "Finder" to set the creation date of (info for someFile) to
date "Thursday, December 2, 2004 11:28:16 PM"
but doesn't do anything.
