Entity Axel Luttgens spoke thus:

In Forth, when we "evaluate an object" it leaves the result on the stack
whether it is a variable or a command.

In Shell, it looks like "evaluation" allows you to assemble shell command
strings from variables containing commands, while "substitution" executes
the command and substitutes it with the result.

So you are saying it helps to be a masochist.

Speaking of historic, I was messing around with DOSShell back in the '80s
even though I didn't know what it was. Now I understand it is the
underpinnings of the GUI, and Terminal is a CLI to the shell. 10.2 was my
first exposure to UNIX and it's great!

Sure did! Thanks for taking all the time to explain it.
