voice alert

Hello! Hopefully i'm on the right list for my question. If not i'm sure i'll be notified right away ;)

I'm a newbie to AS. By newbie i mean I have yet to code a single line of AppleScript code, but hope to develop an understanding of it and eventually be able to develop minor scripts/applications. For now i have one small project i need help with...

I have an old iMac set up as my fax machine. I don't use it for anything else so it usually sits there idling away. Can i easily set up some kind of voice alert on the iMac to say "You've received a FAX!" and pop up a dialog on my workstation that's on the same network? I have it set up to email the fax to me, but that's not working at all...no matter what i try and it seems to be a problem others are experiencing so i thought this might be a good workaround.

One more question. If a person wanted to start learning AS where should one start. Most of the books and other resources i've found seem to be more reference material for someone with some AS experience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Brian
