As far as I know, you'll need to send the command(s) to a running app on the remote machine. Try sending it to System Events or Finder. Something like this might work.

using terms from application "Finder"
tell application "Finder" of machine "eppc://user:email@hidden"
do shell script "date"
end tell
end using terms from

This general syntax works for me when talking to OS 9 from OS X. Obviously I didn't send a shell command to OS 9 and, unfortunately, I don't have access to a remote OS X box.
