Thanks for the help.
It's too late for me to check the applets -- I've replaced them all already.
Following up on your other suggestion, I replaced a bunch of suspect plist
files in ~/Library/Preferences/ with copies from an old backup and the OS
seems much more stable.
I'm still suffering from "unexpectedly quit" errors when I quit an app and
my battery seems to get more messed up by the hour. If this is anything like
when Jaguar killed my battery, I'm going to end up with a new battery and
motherboard before this is over.
I'm finding little problems all over the drive. I think the solution to most
of this will be to restore the drive from that old backup. I would have done
a fresh backup before the software update, but a "security update" seemed so
trivial...
