manually using the Terminal and it didn't change the background of
the folder. I suspect that what you are talking about is only for
disks at the root level of the disk or some such thing. The Finder
sure doesn't use that method, I tried setting the background through
the Finder and it didn't create any hidden folders or files in the
folder.
Ah you're right. That explains why I seem to recall a folder
.bg[something]; must've been just a "this-oughta-hide-it" kinda
thing. I can't even find any data structure on the disk to account
for the stored info (presumably it would have to track at least a
file id, which must be what, 4 bytes?).
This is indeed a puzzle.
Could it be hidden in the boot blocks? (I miss FEdit 3.2.1...)
