The x86 family FPU (which was an x87) used 80 bit registers
internally as far back as the 8086 at least.
The 80 bits are assigned as follows:
1 bit : sign
15 bits: exponent
64 bits: mantissa
The Motorola 68000 family FPU uses 80 registers too.
