That's a kind of dislike that many of us share. For your information, here each of our machines runs (under Smile) a sort of "smarterCron" which checks "on idle" for new things to do (for instance, daily backups), 24/7, every 300 secondes by default and every 10 secondes when there's more activity. So far we observe no adverse effect.
