I've never quite understood what "moot" really means, so I just go

As I understand it, "moot" means something along the lines of
"overtaken by events."
It's actually from the Old English and means `an undecided or disputed
point' in this case.
Two definitions which seem to contradict each other:
1. Open to argument or debate; "that is a moot question"
2. A point or question related to a legal case that usually has no
practical importance or relevance to the case.
So is it, or is it not, worth discussing a "moot question" or "moot
point"?
I really think we should nail this down. ;-)
