If I replace "file type" with "+class asty;" and then compile, it

um, lovely. that should actually be (or at least look like) "<<class
asty>>"
What it actually is, is those chevron thingies, or "LEFT-POINTING and
RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION" at least according to the
Character Palette. Use Option-\ and Option-Shift-\ to type them.
This is a long-standing gripe about Apple's lists, which don't like any
of them fancy characters. The result is that many characters commonly
used in AppleScripts can't be reproduced on the AS list (!). The
workaround is to 'approximate' the characters (as you have done) or
describe them. Those chevron whatsits have been called many things
here. The most accurate term is probably 'guillemets', although this
always puts me in mind of a certain auk-related sea bird.
