Indeed, "Synchronize folders" will launch Smile, but you can still keep working in Script Debugger.

Back to the original topic, "backup" does resolve the aliases located at the first level of the folder provided as the command's direct object.
This, and how to use the "backup" command at best, is documented in the documentation of the Satimage osax:
<http://www.satimage-software.com/en/downloads_documentation.html>

Basically you would have a "items to backup" folder where you gather the aliases of the files and folders that you want to backup.
