curl is more official because it's bundled with OS X (although in
10.0.something it was wget instead of curl).
Actually, my impress[i]on predates OS X, going back to curl's infancy.
I wonder which utility existed first? (I don't recall hearing any
chatter about wget, but curl got lots of mention, sounding like
"We're gonna make the be-all and end-all library/utility for fetching
URLs.")
curl is great at downloading either a single file or a list of them.
It supports more protocols than wget, and can also upload files.
Thanks! That definitely sounds better.
wget will read the pages it's downloaded to find more links to
download, and can relink them after downloading. It's great for
things like downloading all the thumbnails on a page, downloading
all the linked images on a page, or even downloading an entire web
site to your local drive complete with directory structure.
Yuck... now I think I'd like to find out its UA string so I can block
wget from my site. Don't want no site-suckers visiting. (Anyone got a
list of those?)
thanks,
