That's not necessary. AppleScript is tremendously versatile about
understanding dates (almost too versatile).

For example:

set x to "<td align=right><font face='Arial' size='2'>8-Jan-2004</font></td></tr>
"
date x
-- error message

set y to "<td align=right><font face='Arial' size='2'>8-Jan-2004</font><"
date y
-- date "Wednesday, 02 January 2008 00:00:00"

set z to "font face='Arial' size='2'>8-Jan-2004</font></td></tr>
"
date z
-- date "Wednesday, 02 January 2008 00:00:00"

Really versatile :)
