What you will do will be well done, but let me draw your attention on the fact that the authors of scriptable text editors handle the exact same problem, and that we might loose some clarity (read: add to the indescriptible mess) when we have one rule for AppleScript variables and one for text windows.

Presently, the empty string (as an AppleScript variable) has one paragraph, and so had the empty window in Smile.
