Basically, you could go to the parent and check which item number it is and refer to it generically by index. I don't have Photoshop to test it, but it could be a solution.

To the people who consider themselves "Professional Scripters" and think it grants them a license to abuse (as opposed to acting with integrity): Hopefully, even though I'm not an expert in this domain, my idea will be considered worthwhile. (Yes Paul, you)
