But what happens now when it crashes? Is the machine just on and 'hung' and
displaying a dialog when you return?
Does the app crash and then just blink a warning in your menu bar for days
on end?
Does the app crash and other things proceed as normal?

Thanks to anyone who can supply some guidance.
Ask someone who's at the office to at least tell you what the dialog says.
;)
But seriously, there might be other tools that could help you out. For
example, is there an Okey Dokey replacement for X? Does the Xserve have
some kind of processor launcher control, to keep processes going? Is there
another application which you could test?
There is lots in the archive about Stay Open applications, including some
recent X-specific threads on that very subject. The environment in which
you will make your script will also be relevant (Smile vs. SE vs. ASS etc.)
