I obviously *did* have the syntax pretty wildly wrong! (I thought I was using an example from from Danny Goodman's Applescript Handbook, chapter on FileMaker Pro, but I got it second-hand from someone else).

I should have mentioned that this app I'm writing is a batch process to fetch emails from Entourage and file them into a FMP database. No requirements about the window state of either of those. This is my first applescript, and I guess the primary use for AS is to automate GUI (interactive) operations rather than batch jobs. Anyway, that gives me a great clue for how to read FM's dictionary and figure out which objects and events I *shouldn't* be using -- namely, those having to do with GUI elements like window.
