Creating signature in Mail.app

I've recently written an applescript that looks up a quote of the day
from a website and creates a new random signature quote for my default
signature in Mail.app on Panther. To get the quote, I wrote a short
perl script that uses the site's RSS feed and then extracts a random
quote. My script works fine in that it creates a new signature using
the quote; however, unless I open and close the preferences for
mail.app, the most recently chosen signature is not saved between
launches of mail.app. In other words, the default random quote
signature reverts to the one saved the last time preferences was opened
and closed. What ways are available other than gui scripting to update
Mail.app's preferences?
