This seems to work dependably.

The objective is to make sure I will not attempt to add a record with a non-unique MessageID. Doing so generates a general "Invalid data" error from filemaker, since MessageID is defined as "unique". I suppose I *could* use that error as evidence that I attempted to add a record with a non-unique MessageID, but that seems extremely unwise.
