Can someone please chime in on how do divert the XML post generated by
the 'call soap' command to say a local text file so that it can be
examined?
Also where can I find the 'call soap' dictionary listing?

Try AEXMLTutor by Steve Zellers. Put your AppleScript in the top window and the XML is displayed in the bottom window.
