OT - What is File IO (or I/O)?

Hi all!

I've heard lots of times about IO -including other programmming languages-,
but what is "IO" exactly?

I know there are at least two scripting additions (old ones) which include
in their names the "File IO" stuff, and provide commands to read and write
to files but... Is such a simple explanation? (And what is the "I" and what
the "O"?)
