making a chart in Excel 2004?

i can make a chart object instance. i can get the chart instance in that chart object instance. i have no idea how to put data into the chart. you can't create a chart group, although there seems to be one in the chart instance, and you can't create a new series which seems to be the actual plotted data.

there's a nice command called chart wizard which seems to be intended to quickly make a chart but when i give it a chart instance as an argument, the one from the chart object instance it tells me that a chart object doesn't understand the chart wizard command even though the dictionary says that it should.

has anyone figured out how to make a simple line chart? any help would be appreciated. thanks.
