What version of System Events are you running? It should 1.2.1 since earlier
versions were extremely flaky. Others on this list will say they are all
extremely flaky.

Also, it used to be necessary to enable "Enable Access for Assistive
Devices" in Universal Access prefpanel for System events to work. I turned
it off and my script still works but possibly older versions would act
differently.

And make sure the eppc port is open:
