Appl vs Compiled Script Speed Difference

Hi,

Can someone explain to me why it is that my scripts (in Panther) run so much
faster if they are compiled scripts and run from inside Script Editor (or
another script runner) as opposed to when they are saved as applications and
run that way? For example, I have a script that removes all my organizations
email entries from the Entourage address book then reads in an updated list
from a file and recreates the entries. It flies as a compiled script but
plods along many times slower as an app.

It ran quite fast as an app in MacOS 9, even on much slower Macs than I have
now.

Thanks,

Jack
