A Real Puzzle

Sometimes AppleScript will create a real which can be converted to text but which cannot be reconverted back into a real. How should one handle such a case?

My particular need is that I put up a dialog box prepopulated with, say, X. I ask the user to supply a new X. If the user just pushes return than sometimes I trigger the error that this text can't be converted to a real. Too many decimals, is my guess. But how to limit the # of digits in a real to avoid this? I can't just drop off the last few characters because they may well contain the exponent.

Regards,

Nelson Byrne
