I set my Date formatting options for the system to various formats, set the
FM date field to various formats, and the script I posted works fine OMM.

FM takes it own date formatting from the System formats, or warns you if the
file's are different and lets you retain or replace the formats. I suppose
that makes the difference in what order you put back together the string
version of the date.

The FM example file I made, with the script, is here:
