SE 1.8.3 Mac OS 9.1 works as expected showing ^1^2^3^4 with two buttons.

But it's really wild if you leave out the quotes!

(display dialog) ^ (1 ^ (2 ^ (3 ^ 4)))

I think it's trying to raise a variable <display dialog> to powers. I thought "display dialog" would be a reserved phrase and create an error condition other than "can't make into a string".

I'm betting that the hat effect has to do with ^1 and the like being interpreted as a 16 bit unicode point.
