OS X File system Layout (was Re: AppleScript & HTML Again...)

At 04:26a -0600 03/29/2004, Dennis W. Manasco didst inscribe upon an electronic papyrus:

No one dares change either the name or the position of the default directories, nor the location of the programs placed therein, lest their system become useless and unusable the next time they connect to Software Update.

I guess I'm "no one" then. I moved *all* my Apple apps out of /Applications, and most of them out of /Applications/Utilities:
/Applications/Apple/iCal
iChat
iMovie
iPhoto
iSync
Mail
/Applications/VIEWERS:PLAYERS/iTunes
Preview
QuickTime Player
/Applications/UTILITIES-DISK/Disk Copy
Disk Utility
iDisk Utility
/Applications/UTILITIES-GRAPHICS/ColorSync Utility
Grab
Image Capture
/Applications/UTILITIES-NET/AirPort Admin Utility
AirPort Setup Assistant
Bluetooth Serial Utility
Bluetooth Setup Assistant
Directory Access
NetInfo Manager
Network Utility
/Applications/UTILITIES-PRINTING/Print Center
/Applications/UTILITIES-SYSTEM/Apple System Profiler
Audio MIDI Setup
Console
Keychain Access
Process Viewer
System Preferences

If a stupid-ass Apple update puts an update in /Applications, I move it to the desired category. I have always done this, and I will always do this. I have never had a problem (aside from getting pissed at Apple for their stupidity), and if anything ever does break in the future, I will simply file a bug report and hold my ground against any "by design" claims. I suggest the rest of you do likewise. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so squeak loudly and often!

Granted, standard UNIX system files must reside in certain locations for the system to work, but is that any reason why an upgrade of (for instance) Safari should fail spectacularly if the original application has been moved?

Fortunately Safari works fine for me in /Applications/INTERNET/.

Certainly the location of any program in the /Applications folder, /Applications/Utilities folder, or any other non-System folder, should be changeable with impunity.

Agreed. I still have Installer and Terminal in /Applications/Utilities, but only because I have no idea how to categorize them. <g>

IMHO Apple's apparent insistence on requiring Apple-supplied applications to be in unvarying locations is a major security breach waiting to happen.

In addition to just being stupid. :)

Can we complain about the Preferences folder, too? It's in dire need of categorization. The 'defaults' command understands subfolders, so I propose that Apple should build support for "domain folders" such that all "com.apple.*" prefs can be in a "com.apple" folder, etc. I will be using that convention for all future scripts I write (com.natural-innovations/FooBar.plist, etc.).
