determining type of disk?

Hi Scripters

I need an Applescript to be able to distinguish between a writable CD inserted in the CD drive tray, a firewire drive and a network 'disk'.
I haven't tried it yet but I assume that the secret to picking the network disk is by looking at the local volume property.
However I can't find any difference in the properties of a writable CD and a connected firewire drive.
Do I need to use a shell script?
