Jaguar can now do the direct coercion:

This is because AppleScript 1.9 allows coercion from the month
constants to integers.

1.9.1 doesn't in my 10.2.8 set-up.

It's not Jaguar, it's Panther. AppleScript 1.9.2, which came with OS 10.3.0.
The release notes for AS 1.9.2
(<http://www.apple.com/applescript/releasenotes/192OSX.html>) contain:

The month constants can now be coerced to numbers. [2396328]

Release Notes for all versions of AppleScript from 1.7.0 on are available

Ahh, my bad. I thought it was included with 1.9 but it was indeed 1.9.2 when I checked the release notes. Man, even minor version differences can be a pain!
