I'd like to write a script to to toggle my modem's autoconnect

Not without more information from you. In particular, Mac OS version (all I
can tell from your message is that it is some Mac OS version which supports
Eudora 6.0 in Ad mode).

John's and SJWL's comments much appreciated. I'm using OS X (Panther); SJWL's instructions for using FileMerge to isolate the changing value worked. Now, on to the script (leaning towards a wrapper for a quick-and-dirty Perl script to toggle the number in question) --Jonathan
