How about a applet onto which you drop a folder and the applet does something long-term with that folder, such as monitors it for a certain file. Or an applet that keeps track of the last 100 files dropped onto it and gathers them up at some point. These sort of long-term applications certainly need to keep track of each file even if the file moves.

Yes, you don't need this functionality every time you drop a file on an applet but it is still necessary in some circumstances and it should be kept.
