Greetings John,
So are you saying that your problem is not related to a s/mime private
certificate?
What do you get if you start at the beginning like I did?
Open keychain Access and use Window -> Keychain first aid, then the
options but and Reset My keychain. This will remove your current
keychain files from the drawer (they are not removed from
~/Library/Keychains) and creates a new login keychain. You can use
File -> Add keychain to add your previous keychains to the drawer.
Then drag one (or create a test) key item to the new keychain and run a
test script like I have posted before.
When it came to adding many keys, I first got my password on my
clipboard by typing it in textedit or such and copying it, then one can
paste it easily into the authentication prompts when moving keys.
thanks.

I was able to remove the empty list problem by moving my private key
(s/mime) certificate (from thawte) to another keychain. I created a
new blank keychain and added one test key and I was able to list it.
Then I added keys back until I isolated that one as the culprit.
Which
ever keychain I add it to, the request for all keys of that keychain
becomes an empty list and is restored when I remove it.
How weird. Thank you very much for testing thoroughly. I too have the
empty
list problem, and I too have a Thawte Certificate. What a strange
consequence. Better file it as a bug at bugreporter.
God please...I keep getting emails saying "It works for us, here try
this
script."
I say "borked here"
"oh...well that's not right"
