This is an entirely separate problem, but it's a good one. The
existing AppleScript documentation from Apple is structured primarily
as a reference, not as a tutorial, and simply doesn't have the
task-oriented information you're asking for.
Our documentation wizard informs me that the AppleScript Language Guide
(see

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptual/
AppleScriptLangGuide/index.html>) does have an appendix of "Common
Scripting Tasks" that point to examples in Guide, though the examples
it points to are relatively simple. He also suggests checking out the
Essential Subroutines collection
