The one thing I'm noticing about people wanting to disable Rendezvous is
that they fall into two camps:
1) "It's insecure"
2) "It's hosing our network"
As for 1), well, are you using authenticated DHCP? Do you verify that the
server you're getting your information from is indeed valid? If not, then
why are you using DHCP? Is your DHCP traffic encrypted? Why not? The same
for Unicast DNS? I love how in the middle of using a dozen network methods
with all the security of an wide - open door, *RENDEZVOUS* is "a security
hole. Oh please.
2) is less ridiculous, but hardly the fault of Rendezvous. This is usually a
sign that the network administrators got lazy, or were forced to be lazy,
and are running a big fat flat subnet. That is always a bad idea, but if you
have no IP based autodiscovery services, you can get away with it. Now, you
get Zeroconf, which is what Rendezvous is, which is all IP autodiscovery,
and SURPRISE, on a multi-thousand node flat single subnet, you get some
traffic.
I hate it when a bad idea turns out to be a bad idea...but it's still not
the fault of Rendezvous.
