Yes; I've done exactly that (with a very intelligent AS wrapper).
AS+Perl makes a powerful combination.

There are things you can do with Perl that you cannot do with AppleScript.
There are things you can do with AppleScript that you cannot do with Perl.
On OS X, you can do all of them, because the languages can connect.

"Do I want to eat fruits or vegetables?"
Both are good for you; however, they serve different purposes.

I just hope that someday we'll be able to call Perl from within AS without the delay that 'do shell script' currently introduces. (Chris?)
