Yes, the Option key does this.

I cant imagine why option clicking a person hilights their group(s).
Why not always hilight the group(s)? Fueling my confusion was Sticky
Keys which, if youve never used it, is a handy of locking any of the
modifier keys. I had accidently locked the Option key for a while and
was unaware Id done so.

Chalk up another one for Apple Care.
