Interesting, but I'm not sure if it compromises the randomness of the hands or not since you are relying on a random number from 1 to 4 rather than from 1 to 52 and if some hands get full first then the rest of the hands will tend to have more cards from a single suit.

Yep, I'd go along with that Ken ... the simple solution is to shuffle the deck first, in which case you're back to foregoing the sorted hands.
