Ahhh... I get it now! Apparently the default plist file has no key for
AppleShowAllFiles. I had originally run TinkerTool, which must have written
the key as an error condition. It looks like all it needs is:

    <key>AppleShowAllFiles</key>
    <string>1</string>

If someone would email me their pristine
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file I'd like to look at it.
