in an address book script which works on the current selection i want to check whether the seletion contains persons or groups.

Unfortunately, the selection can only be a person. If you click on an empty group, the selection will be {}; if you click on any other group, there will always be at least one person selected in that group, and that person will be the selection, even if its selection bar is grey and the selection bar of the group is the highlight color.
