Hi,

Sorry for the late response but I thought I'd add a comment.

I frequently have to manipulate very,very large text files and I've found the Unix steam editor sed absolutely invaluable.
It's easy to call using do shell script


to count lines it would be sed -n '$='

There is a very useful one page summary here.
