Kia ora, Hi, folks,
I'm planning a system for a customer and need some advice on the best
approach.
They're wanting an *automatic* way to generate a reasonably standard
set of PDF documents for each customer (think standard document with
customer's name in title and footers), which they will then e-mail or
put on CD. The documents are currently in Word but could be moved to a
different product (my preference!)
I'm thinking a FileMaker database may be better for controlling the PDF
generation and any customisable text (plus integrate with a FM customer
database).
The trick part is they want parts of the PDFs to be locked (print only,
no copying text) to make wholesale stealing of their work harder (they
realise it won't be foolproof); and parts to be form-based (i.e.
customer fills in the blanks and then saves and prints).
1. Am I right in assuming you can't lock just parts of a PDF? (so I'll
need to do the documents in sections of both locked and unlocked.)
2. What would I use for getting the text (with formatting) out of
FileMaker and into locked PDFs with form fields?
3. Am I limiting myself by using FileMaker for the source? Maybe
something like InDesign would be better, with an AppleScript to insert
the customer's name on each page?
They're Windoze fans but I should be able to convince them an OS X
based solution is best. It's a new business, so volume will be low
(maybe one a day to start), and funds are tight 8-)
I know lots about FileMaker, reasonable AppleScript, something about
how PDFs are made, and no InDesign. Always keen to learn though.
Hope this isn't too off-topic, I imagine the solution will involve
AppleScript!
Thanks for any pointers.
