I must have something unique to my configs that breaks it, but I can't
imagine what it is, unless it's the /Users/ on a different volume, but that
makes little sense, given that it's a valid thing to do.

Does this mean the path to your home directory is /Volumes/xxx/Users/ja? In which case, unless you've got /User linked to /Volumes/xxx/Users, then that is indeed your problem.


When I had my /User directory on another volume, the only pointer I changed was in NetInfo Manager (once for each user). Maybe you've done it another way and the shell doesn't know your home directory has moved?
