They are not Japanese chars? The last four chars before the
suffix...although the first of them didn't made it thru the list it seems...
"??且丗三"
I just took some Japanese chars from the character palette..
(...) snipped, because solved, see my other answer on Emmanuel's answer.

It is indeed. There are some very strange problems in AS when the system
language is set to Japanese (not only path-related). Other Unicode-depended
languages seem to work better. I hope AppleScript in Tiger will have radical
improvements. I even don't care for backward compatibility, if only Unicode
would finally work reliable thorough AS.
